How to Make a Family Cookbook Online for Free (With Videos)

Start a family cookbook online in an afternoon: create the book, add recipes by photographing the cards, and invite family to add their own. Four short videos show each step.

You can make a family cookbook online for free, from your phone or your computer, without installing anything. The whole family adds recipes to one shared book, and when it's finished you can keep it online or print it. This guide shows the four steps in Kindred Cook, each with a short narrated video.

    1. Start your cookbook

Sign up free at kindredcook.com, then create a cookbook. Give it a name your family will recognize ("Grandma Rose's Kitchen" beats "Family Recipes"), add a cover photo, and add your first recipe. It takes about two minutes.

Start your first family cookbook · 1 min. Name your cookbook, add a cover photo, and add your first recipe.

    2. Add recipes by taking a photo of the card

You don't have to type anything. Take a photo of a handwritten recipe card, a page from an old cookbook, or a screenshot, and Kindred Cook reads it with AI and fills in the title, ingredients and steps for you to check. You can also paste a link to a recipe website.

Then add what makes it a family recipe: a photo of the dish, a family photo if you have one, and a sentence or two about who made it and when.

Add a family recipe · 2 min. Take a photo of a recipe card and it fills itself in. Then add a photo of the dish and the story behind it.

    3. Invite your family

A family cookbook gets finished when everyone adds their own recipes instead of sending them to one person to type. Invite people by email, or copy the invite link and send it in a family group text. Nobody has to pay, and there's no limit on how many people can join.

Invite your family · 1 min. Invite family by email or share a link in a text, so everyone can add their recipes.

    4. Send this one to the people you invite

Grandparents and aunts are often the ones with the best recipes and the least patience for new apps. This video shows exactly what they'll see when they open the invitation, and how to add a recipe from their phone. Send it along with the link.

You've been invited · 2 min. Got an invitation? Join the cookbook and add your first recipe from your phone.

    5. Keep it online, or print it

Your cookbook stays online for free, so anyone in the family can look up a recipe from the kitchen. When you're ready for a book on the shelf, Kindred Cook lays it out for print: a designed PDF ($39), a coil-bound Community Edition that lies flat ($39), a Standard Hardcover ($89), or a cloth Heirloom Edition with a foil-stamped spine ($149). Printing is opening soon; you can join the waitlist from the Pricing page.
